Veteran Bollywood lyricist, poet and filmmaker Gulzar has said that film script dialogue should also find a place in literature like drama. He said this at the inauguration of the three-day international literary festival Unmesh in Shimla on Thursday. Union Minister of State for Culture Arjun Ram Meghwal inaugurated the festival. Gulzar said that this discussion is being held on literature and cinema. Today the cinema stands next to the Sahitya Akademi. Cinema has also given birth to a new language of expression. From moving images to technological developments, cinema has come a long way till date. When it came to storytelling, the search for stories went on. The festival will continue till June 18. More than 425 authors from India and abroad are participating in it.

On the first day there were tremendous sessions on ‘Cinema and Sahitya’. Lyricist Gulzar presided over the first session. In this, many Bollywood celebrities including film directors Vishal Bhardwaj, Goutam Ghosh, Padma Vibhushan Sai Paranjpe took part in the discussion. Gulzar said that when cinema started, there was no dearth of stories in India. There were things like Mahabharata, Ramayana, folk literature. With the passage of time, hands and feet opened up with technology. Now this journey has reached in an interesting way. It was like a movie. I didn’t dare to call it literature.

Only stories were picked up from literature. Now cinema has become its own land. Cinema became a great source of furthering literature. Now the idea is someone else’s story, someone else’s story and someone else to make a film in the cinema. Cinema has come to a point where work is being done without taking up the story at many places. Now cinema has grown. Its stature has increased. Although its age is very less i.e. 100 years, while the literature is 2000 years old. On a question on the impact of social media on literature and cinema, Gulzar said that any fine art is being recorded in any form. Be it media, literature, cinema, music, whatever it is, that time is being recorded. You too will be a part of history, as time goes by. Everything that is recording time is meaningful.

18 events held at seven places on the first day
On the first day of this festival 18 programs were organized at seven places. Events took place at six venues at the Gaiety Theater and the Town Hall. Cultural programs were held at Ridge Maidan. The events took place in the main auditorium, the Gothic Hall, the Fine Arts Gallery, the Tavern Hall, the Town Hall, the meeting hall and the decorated dais on the Ridge Maidan.

Vishal Bhardwaj, director and screenwriter of several films like Kaminey, Omkara, Blue Umbrella, said that Raski Na Saheb’s Blue Umbrella was a very short story. The thief is caught after stealing the umbrella. The thief was caught in this. It used to be a short film of 45-50 minutes. There is a story here, he fell in the color of a jackal. Its color changed. Got a clue from him. After a year and a half, I remembered that if the umbrella is not found, then it will become a complete film. After this a film was made on it. He wants to say this because there is a mixture of fine arts in cinema. Painting, music, poetry are all there. It goes beyond literature. This is literature for them.
